Gonna Retire This Thing

That's right, folks! I have been neglecting this blog, and it's mostly because I am too busy to keep up with it. Also I really can never think of much to say.

Originally I was going to make it sort of a 'sketch blog', but then decided that the scraps section in my DeviantArt Account serves the exact same purpose. So...why have rough sketches in two places?

Anyhow...

Thanks for reading, for those who did. I'll probably eventually delete this whole thing. Don't worry though--as I said, all that's here is at DA too. So from now on, check there for stuff you might not see on the official (DrunkDuck) Antcomics page.

Check out this banner that Antlady, one of the founders of The Family of Noise, designed!

Hey, The Guys are animated for the first time! :)

Come to the Family of Noise!

The Family of Noise!

There's a brand new Ant fansite out there, and it was launched on May 17, 2008 (which happens to be my birthday!). It's called The Family of Noise, and they have used my Antcomics to illustrate it! I was blown away when they showed me the prototype...I mean, WOW.

Anyhow, click to check it out. It's very cool. Those guys worked their asses off on it, so go tell them what a great job they did!

What this Hyar Thing was Intended For!

That's right! Wow, sorry to neglect this thing so long.

Here is a peek into my last sketchbook. I was practicing facial expressions for Marco in the "Marco's Crush" story arc. I just went wild here, y'know? I have to warm up to get those crazy-ass facial expressions down.

Hey, quick sidenote: be sure and visit my DrunkDuck User page. There are new goodies up there, including a new comic I've started out called The Compozerz.

Not Dead!

...for those of you paying attention...

Yeah I plan to make this thing a lot more exciting. I been really busy with a lot of fan art, and this art exchange thing I did at DeviantArt.

I am (hopefully) also getting close to bringing the current Ants story arc wrapped up. I'll be updating that tonight. So far the Ants have pretty much wrecked the bowling alley, made the owner pretty mad, and Marco and Adam are at each other's throats. Oh yeah---one little catch--the owner has a crush on Gary! Chaos abounds (as usual!).

Anyhow, I will be posting lots of rough sketches and other stuff once I get the latest comic up. More later!

Got me a tablet!

Well...I'm borrowing one, anyhow, from my brother.

I thought I'd share the first drawing attempt with it, ever, here:

It's weird. For me drawing with the mouse is easier at this point. This'll take some getting used to!

I need to get busy scanning so I'll have more stuff up here. Sorry about the wait on that! Currently aside from doing the Antcomics, I'm posting a couple of other comics I do at DrunkDuck too. So I spend a heckuva lot of time scanning stuff!

One Year of the Ants!

Here's that One Year Ants drawing I promised you.
I really like how this turned out. I tried to follow an actual photo of the Guys from the PC era (once you click the above link you'll see another link in my comments where you can have a look at my cartoon and the photo side by side).

Not a lot of other news, except that Art book AA is thinking of having released has a new registration page (see my links over on your right there). The old one went screwy or something and you'll need to re-register if you're interested in purchasing a copy, should it materialize...

Amy out! Thanks again for reading my comics.

One Year of Antcomics!

Ohhhh boy!
I can't beleieve the one year anniversary of Antcomics is here! Well technically it's February 17th (when the first comic was actually completed, and that'd be this one)...but I am gonna do a special 1 year drawing-type-thingy.

Here is a rough sketch of it:

Here's to 100 more years! Er...you know, till my drawing hand gives out...

Character Meme

Someone over at DeviantArt created this "Character Meme". I did one on Adam:

El Clicko!

It was a lot of fun to do.

Not much other news, except I pretty much have the rest of the "Bowling" story worked out. I need to work on the next installment. It will probably be up at DrunkDuck Monday or Tuesday.

Question of the Day!

I got another inquiry about Antcomics today.

Today's question comes from worstcase, author of the webcomic, Faults:

Q. How long does it take you to make a regular Ants comic?

A. I can usually crank one out in one evening. Sometimes I have to do a rough sketch (usually with stickmen in my sketchboook), other times I will already have a rough draft. Sometimes, though, I don't sketch a rough draft. I just sit down and start on the comic.

It starts with a penciled version, then I ink it. Usually I sit down at around 6:30 or 7:00. If I'm lucky, the thing's done, inked, pencil lines erased by 10:00 p.m. Sometimes though, it can take till eleven or midnight. Then once I scan it, there's usually around a half hour to an hour of tweaking it, drawing box-- you know, making it look all snazzy.

If I color one, tack another entire evening on. This is, of course, if it's a multi-framer. If it's relatively simple, like say, a one-framer, I might be able to finish it all in one night. Usually though, I am so wiped out by the time I ink one that I have to call it quits for the evening.

Now, those calendar pages were a different story. I worked on a couple all day on a couple of Saturdays (namely the September and December pictures). Actually, I think the Christmas one took me all day Saturday and part of Sunday.

And there ya go, worstcase! Thanks for the question.

Anybody else got questions? Hit meh!

Ant Neighbor Ideas

So I'm trying to come up with more neighbors for the Ants. I have been kicking around ideas for some; I think there need to be a) more secondary characters and b) more females.

So far, we have met the mean and slobbery Mr. Laccolith, and the nice old lady, Mrs. Fookoo. Mr. Laccolith made his debut in "New Neighbor" and Mrs. Fookoo in "Marco's Crush."

Yesterday, during a meeting at work, I doodled some more people in my tablet...click the thumbnail below to see it:

So...if you have any thoughts, comments, suggestions, whatever...leave me a comment! You can also e-mail me anytime.

And there ya have it! One of those little 'extras' I promised you! ^o^

In other news, I did some fan art for another comic artist. Check it out here, on my DA page.

Going to get some sketches scanned...

Hang in there, everybody! I need to start scanning some sketchbooks.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd post an answer to a question someone asked me the other day about the Antcomics. A reader asked me about the cartoon Ants' personalities, and if I based them on the real Ants' personalities.

Well, I thought about that and said I basically made most of it up. I know a bit about Adam's, but barely anything about the rest of them. So yeah, I sort of guessed on that.

I did, however, use the Antmuzak video as sort of a basis. For those unfamiliar with it, Antmuzak is a short film done by Godman Productions, wherein Adam and the Ants go shopping at the supermarket. As some of you know, that was what really inspired the Antcomics. It's really some funny stuff.

In the video, Adam was (of course) the take charge type, Gary was kind of the straight man (and seemed to be the most organized and serious of the bunch), the two drummers were the goonballs, and Marco...well, he liked to eat a lot. :)

So basically, that's what I did with my comics.

I also sort of used things I read in Adam Ant's biography and other bits of info picked up from interviews or what-haveya that I had seen. I sort of get the idea that Terry Lee was sort of the 'class clown' so to speak (I could also be totally off base about this). So he became the silly, goofy, sometimes off-the-wall member of the bunch. Merrick isn't as zany as Terry Lee, but I decided they could play off of each other. Merrick could make sarcastic remarks a lot at Terry's behavior.

Gary, like I said, is the organized one. The cooking thing just came to me later, in a strip called "The Human Beans" where he and Terry Lee cook dinner. I decided to make Gary the culinary master, the guy that cleaned house...the "anal retentive" one, I guess you'd say. It's fun. And since I like cooking, well...there are a lot of possibilities with the Gary character.

Marco was going to be the sarcastic one, but as the comic blossomed, he became a lot goofier than I had intended. However, it seems to have worked. So may things I have read about the real Marco indicated that he was a big fan of eating...and in the Antmuzak video this is really apparent, so the eating thing has, of course, been weaved into my comic as well.

Adam's sort of taken on the job of parental unit to the other Ants in a way. He's the leader, of course, and without him the other Ants'd probably just run around in circles all confused or...something. He sort of plays the "straight man" too; however, I like to work a teeny little inflated ego in there too (not to be mean or anything--you know what power does to people though). Adam has delusions of grandeur sometimes, but is still totally loveable. He is the guy the other Ants go to for help, for they think he is very wise (for some reason). He isn't the sort of guy that will admit he doesn't know about something (prime example, the latest story arc entitled "Bowling"). Adam is a B.S.er, to the Max. He tries to be smooth about it, but usually botches it in some way, or gets injured.

I made Adam a bit clutzy in the comic. The reason for this...uh, well, slapstick in comics is just plain funny. Plus people seem to get a kick out of seeing Adam abused. In real life I don't think he is a clutz; he seems awful damn graceful to me. Maybe that's why it's fun drawing him flying though the air, landing in the water...or flying off his bike...or the countless other abuses I have subjected the poor guy to. I dunno.

So anyhow, there you have it, my long-winded answer to the Ants' personalities questions. Any other questions are always welcome here at this blog-thingie. Feel free to ask those burning questions here. Warning: I may just get rambly about the answer...

So I started this here blog Thang...

I decided to start a blog about my wildly popular webcomic, Antcomics. Well okay, it's not really 'wildly' popular...but moderately. Yeah 'moderately' is a nice word.

Anyhow. Antcomics was started (officially) in February of 2007, I started the website in April of '07, and began posting the comics at DrunkDuck in May of '07. I was featured there in October of '07 (woot!)...a big surprise to me, and quite an honor, I gotta say. For them to pick my little comic that at the time, had only around 45 pages, was quite a big thing (there are over 5000 comics there).

I have noticed that a lot of other webcomikers post blogs on their comics; I decided I'd do the same. Here I'll feature extra little goodies like rough sketches, storyboards, that kind of thing. I don't want it to just be a repeat of everything I have done over at Tripod and DD, after all.

I will also post some brainstorms and other goofy things here; I know there are a ton of you out there that are just dying to dive inside my little mind and see what's going on in there.

I guess you could call this sort of an 'online sketchbook'.

I'll also welcome any and all questions about the Antcomics. I love answering questions (I'll try not to get too long winded in my answers, but that ain't no guarantee).

So...welcome to the world of the Cartoon Ants.

Oh, and before you ask, no I have not gotten any responses from any of the Ants on these comics. I'm not going to be pushy about that kinda thing. I don't want to come across as too creepy and/or annoying. I'm just having a little fun here, satirizing one of my favorite bands of all time. You know what they say about satire and flattery and all that jazz...
